In the Catholic Church, we celebrate a season called “Advent.” It’s the four-week Church season leading up to Christmas, which marks the beginning of the Church’s calendar. So now, in the weeks leading up to Advent, we continue to have Sunday readings that sound like a lot of “gloom and doom” or “end of days” narratives. 

So how do we make sense of what we hear at Mass this Sunday? Are we a people who ring the alarm bells condemning the world and threatening people about the end of the world? Do we stand on the street corners and shout out that everyone should be warned about the apocalypse? Not quite. There’s a lot more going on in these readings and in our beliefs.
