Social Concerns
Soup Kitchen
On the third Friday of each month, St. Mary’s and First Presbyterian Churches provide food and staff for a soup kitchen in Waukegan. Our workers arrive around 4:00 p.m. and leave when their schedules require. We generally finish our work about 7:15 p.m. Dinner is served between 5:30 and 6:30pm. We prepare by setting tables, warming casseroles, preparing salads and other food to serve our guests (about 120-140) a healthy and attractive meal. Some parishioners send food and cannot come. Others come, and don’t bring food. Some do both. Meat, potatoes, rice, vegetables, casseroles (all cooked), bread, fruit and salad ingredients are welcome. Gifts can be left at the rectory until 3:20 p.m. on soup kitchen day.
Need a ride? Anyone wanting to caravan is welcome to meet at the rectory at 3:45pm. Rides may be able to be arranged. Please let us know of your plans.
